The City of Onkaparinga (map) is a short distance from the Adelaide CBD, making it both a liveable city and an attraction for tourism. The City of Onkaparinga has the largest population of all councils in South Australia. As at 30 June 2016, the city had an estimated resident population (ERP) of 167,000 persons, accounting for approximately ten per cent of South Australia’s total population.
The population levels within the city vary widely across suburbs. According to the 2016 Census, the suburb with the largest population was Morphett Vale with 23,150 residents, followed by Happy Valley and Aberfoyle Park, each with approximately 11,300 residents. There were also a number of suburbs in mainly rural areas with a population of less than 500 persons such as Ironbank, Kuitpo, Blewitt Springs and Tatachilla. Areas such as Noarlunga Centre and Lonsdale, which are mainly commercial districts, also have low population levels.
